Two adolescents drown in Rangpur

Two adolescents, who are relatives, embraced their tragic ends after drowning in the river Ghaghot at Singhimari Ghat point under Sadar upazila of Rangpur district this afternoon, police said.

The deceased were identified as class-eight student Sumaiya Akhter Shimu, 13, daughter of late Ataur Rahman of Purbo Barobari Dararpar village under Sadar upazila in Rangpur and Sakib Ahmed, 16, son of Abdur Rashid of Sreerampur village under Sadullapur upazila in Gaibandha districts.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Thana ABM Zahidul Islam said Sakib came to the house of his maternal grandfather's house at Purbo Barobari Dararpar village.

At around 1 pm today, Sakib, who appeared in the last SSC examinations from Sadullapur, along with his maternal aunty Sumaiya Akhter Shimu, went to the nearby river Ghaghot.

At one stage, Sakib started taking bathe in the river when he drowned as he did not know how to swim.

Sumaiya Akhter Shimu, who knew to swim, immediately jumped into the river to save Sakib. But, both of them met tragic ends there as Shimu failed to save Sakib.

"After the incident, local villagers rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies and handed over those to their relatives this afternoon," the OC added.
