The leading trade body Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) claimed that the country has suffered a colossal economic loss of Tk 36445.76 crore in the last 16 days’ nationwide hartal and blockade programmes.
DCCI President Hossain Khaled came up with the shocking disclosure at a press conference held in its conference room.
He mentioned that the everyday economic losses due to hartal are around Tk 2277.86 crore. "The losses we suffered in the 16 days’ shutdowns are 2.697 percent of the GDP," the DCCI President said.
The DCCI proposed forming a citizen council with senior citizens, business representatives, media personnel, educationists and experts to deal with the current situation, UNB reports.
Hossain Khaled said political parties will have to reach a solution through effective discussions so that the economy does not get affected.
The DCCI urged the political parties to avert violence and destructive political activities.
