Apollo Hospitals Dhaka introduced Gamma Probe, an instrument used to identify suspected cancer cell, for the first time in Bangladesh.

For the treatment of early Breast Cancer, Gamma probe is very much essential & only available in Apollo Hospitals Dhaka.

Recently Mrs. Sharmin, 43 years gentle lady, came from Chittagong with Breast Cancer and underwent this kind of surgery in Apollo Hospitals Dhaka. Very next day she was discharged with complete recovery.

During operation this instrument is used to identify suspected cancer cell loaded armpit lymph node, which is usually the first destination of spread of cancer cells.

To confirm the spread of cancer cell in a particular lymph node, that is being removed and send for frozen section (frozen section means histopathological reporting during surgery). If cancer cell is not found further excision of armpit tissues are not required or done. Therefore, patient can avoid, Postoperative major morbidities like upper limb swelling, continuous pain, infection etc. which she may have to bear throughout her life in various intensities. Basically to avoid unnecessary armpit surgery and its complications, gamma probe is very much needed.

Apollo Hospitals Dhaka’s well-known General, Laparoscopic & G.I Surgical Oncologist Dr. Mohammad Farid Hossain is doing this procedure regularly and successfully.
