The government has taken an initiative for creating the post of administrative officer (AO) for 470 upazilas in the country to assist the Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs).
Sources at the public administration ministry said the move has been taken to enhance coordination between the UNO office and the upazila-based government offices.
It was also decided at the deputy commissioners (DCs) conference in 2015 that AOs will be recruited at all the UNO offices across the country,
Sources said apart from doing official duties, UNOs have to remain busy running mobile courts, monitoring educational institutions, union land offices, union parishads, NGO offices and development projects.
A UNO has also to do various tasks like leasing out bazaar and markets, making budget, preparing various bills and maintaining coordination with other offices in the upazila, they
But, there is no subordinate or aide to the UNOs at most of the upazilas to assist them.
At present, there are AOs in only sadar upazila UNO offices of 19 former greater districts. There is no AO at the rest of the 470 UNO offices of the country.
The administration wing of the public administration ministry in a recent letter has urged the authorities concerned to take steps to create post of AO for 470 UNO offices.
The letter signed by Iliya Sumona, deputy secretary of administration wing, said the AOs will enjoy salaries under grade-11 as per the national pay scale 2015.
The letter also mentioned that through creation of AO post, it will be possible to evaluate activities of upazila-level officials along with creating opportunity of their promotion.
At present, an UNO office is running with 16 officials and employees, including UNO, a office super and an accounts assistant.
