Man killed in Joypurhat ‘gunfight’

An alleged criminal was killed in a reported gunfight between his associates and members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Dadra-Jonti in Sadar upazila early Wednesday, reports unb.

The deceased was identified as Safinul Islam alias Safin, 29, son of Nazrul Islam, a resident of South Dewan Para in Sadar municipal area.

Major Hasan Arafat, commanding officer of Rab-5, said tipped off that Safin along with his associates was staying in the area, a team of the elite force conducted a drive there at about 3:00 am.

Sensing presence of Rab members, the criminals opened fire at them, prompting the elite force to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.

Safin was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his associates managed to flee the scene.

Later, the Rab members recovered the body and sent it to Joypurhat Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

They also recovered one foreign pistol and three rounds of bullets from the spot.

Safin was accused in 10 cases, including for murders.
