Former Nepali PM Oli cancels Bangladesh visit to attend Awami League council

Former Prime Minister of Nepal KP Sharma Oli’s scheduled visit to Bangladesh has been canceled in the wake of an impeachment motion in Nepalese parliament against a constitutional body for corruption control.

Local newspaper Himalayan Times reports, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority's Chief Lok Man Singh Karki is facing an impeachment motion by Mr. Oli's party main opposition CPN-UML and CPN Maoist Centre. Mr. Oli was scheduled to leave for Dhaka of Bangladesh on Friday to take part in the council of Awami League.

According to a statement issued by party Secretary Krishna Gopal Shrestha, the visit was cancelled due to recent political developments in the nation.

As many as 157 lawmakers from the governing CPN Maoist Centre and the main opposition CPN-UML on Wednesday evening had registered a proposal at the Parliament Secretariat, seeking to impeach Karki.

The UML on Thursday had issued a whip to its leaders to compulsorily attend the Parliament meeting scheduled for Sunday.  Oli was scheduled to meet Bangladeshi Prime Minister and leader of Awami League Sheikh Hasina during the visit.
