PM mourns death of Thai King Bhumibol

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday expressed deep shock at the death of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

"I am most deeply shocked and saddened to learn that His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Thailand's beloved Monarch, breathed his last this afternoon in Bangkok," she said in a message sent to Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Sheikh Hasina said King Bhumibol has always been held in the highest esteem in Bangladesh as a symbol of benevolence, dedication and humanitarianism. "We recall with great reverence his visit to Dhaka in 1962," she said.

"The Thai King would always be revered in our hearts as an ideal monarch, and a successful champion of the Sufficiency Economy Development doctrine," the premier said.

On behalf of the government and the people of Bangladesh and on her own behalf, the prime minister offered sincerest condolences at the sad demise of His Majesty and prayed for the eternal peace and salvation of his departed soul.

"We also convey our deep sympathies for the distinguished members of the bereaved Royal family of Thailand and stand next to the Government and the people of the Kingdom of Thailand during this most challenging time of grief and mourning for the Kingdom," she said.

"We pray that Thailand and its people would be able to bear this inconsolable loss with fortitude and patience," she added.
