Vessel owners to sit with shipping minister today

Lighter Vessel Owners’ Association and Launch Owners’ Association members will sit for talks with Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan today to find the way out from the deadlock over the ongoing strike enforced by the water transport workers, reports UNB.

Gulzar Ali, joint director general of BIWTA, said the meeting scheduled to start around noon.

On the other hand, bulkhead vessel workers lifted their strike from Friday morning, considering the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha holiday.

Besides, 35 launches on 17 routes including, Dhaka-Chandpur, Dhaka-Shariatpur, Dhaka-Bhola, Dhaka-Barisal, Dhaka-Patuakhali and Dhaka-Pirojpur ones, left Sadarghat Launch Terminal in the morning as a section of the launch workers’ association withdrew their strike earlier.

On Tuesday, water transport workers, under the banner of Water Transport Workers’ Action Committee, went on an indefinite strike to press home their four-point demand including fixation of minimum salary for the river transport workers at Tk 10,000.
