Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury on Wednesday said that it is now the time to turn on cash crop production and that change will benefit to farmers as we are being self-sufficient in food production.


The minister made the statement while addressing a seminar on "Agricultural Economy and Potential Bangladesh" arranged by the East West University (EWU) Agro Industrial Club in city’s Aftabnagar.


"As well as the continuation of the increasing food production, the government now given more emphasis on Genetically Modified (GM) food crops production," the minister said, adding that there was no harmful evidence found on GM food crops, BSS reports.


After increasing more capacity on electricity production of the country, agricultural product preservation system will be also ensured, she said.


Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, chairperson of Board of Trustees, EWU and former governor of Bangladesh Bank, presided over the function while Dr Gowher Rizvi, advisor for the International Affairs of the Prime Minister, and M Anis Ud Dowla, chairman of ACI Limited, were present as special guests.


Vice-Chancellor of EWU Professor Dr M M Shahidul Hassan has given the opening speech at the seminar.


Members of Board Trustees, Deans of faculties, Chairpersons of different departments, Faculty members, Administrative Officers and a large number of students of the university were also present, among others.
