The dawn-to-dusk countrywide hartal, enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami protesting the Appellate Division’s upholding the death penalty of its Ameer war criminal Matiur Rahman Nizami, is underway in a relaxed manner.
The shutdown started at 6:00am on Thursday. No picketing and procession in support of hartal has been reported in Dhaka, elsewhere of the country.
On the other hand, members of law enforcement agencies have remained on alert position across the country, including the city to tackle sabotages during hartal.
Earlier on Wednesday, the appellate division of the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence of war criminal Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami on charge of killing intellectuals, mass killing and rape during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
Later, Jamaat’s acting Ameer Makbul Ahmad and acting secretary general Dr Shafikur Rahman declared the countrywide daylong hartal through a press statement.
