Awami League (AL) joint general secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif on Monday said if BNP tries to create anarchy in the name of programme on January 5, the people of the country would give the party a strong reply.
“BNP is hatching conspiracy regarding its January 5 programme. Police arrested five Jamaat men along with Tk 5 crore on Saturday. What is their target? Their target is to announce subversive programmes like January 5 last year,” he said.
The ruling party leader came up with the remarks in an extended meeting of AL’s Dhaka city unit at the party’s office in the city’s Bangabandhu Avenue, UNB reports.
The meeting was convened as part of preparations to mark ‘the Victory Day for Democracy’ on January 5.
Hanif said “People gave you (Khaleda) a befitting reply for subversive acts carried out in 2015. Permission has been given to BNP to hold programme on January 5. If BNP carries out any subversive acts, its consequences wouldn’t be good.”
About holding rally in Suhrawardy Udyan, he said that Suhrawardy Udyan is linked with the spirit of liberation war.
“Awami League is a party of liberation war. They can hold programme there. We would request Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to take action so that the anti-liberation force and the collaborators of Pakistan can never hold programme there. People of the country don’t wan to see them at Suhrawardy Udyan,” Hanif added.
Both AL and BNP wanted to hold rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on January 5. But both the parties were denied permission by DMP to hold rallies there.
On January 5, 2014 election, he said that a constitutional vacuum would have come about if the election was not held and some ‘evil force’ may have gotten the opportunity to assume state power.
“The constitutional process as well as development of the country has been preserved and continued as the election was held in proper time,” he added.
