Senior Awami League leader and its advisory committee member Suranjit Sengupta on Friday said the popularity of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is on the wane due to her repeated mistakes in the politics that subsequently led to the disaster in the first ever party symbol based municipal polls recently.
The veteran Awami League leader came up with the comment while speaking at a meeting in the capital on Friday afternoon.
Suranajit Sengupta urged Khaleda Zia to keep pace with the democratic practices for greater welfare of the country in a bid to restore the party image and to get back in power.
The ruling Awami League-backed mayoral candidates won the Wednesday’s municipal elections by a brute majority, leaving the major opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in tatters in the field of politics.
The AL won 177, out of 234 mayoral posts, and the arch-rival BNP only 23 in the battle of ballots held on partisan basis for the first time in the country’s history.
