Rowshan for free, fair municipal elections

Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Begum Rowshan Ershad on Tuesday urged the concerned authorities to make the municipal elections free and fair.

"It is possible for Election Commission (EC) to conduct free and fair polls," she told journalists at a press conference at Jatiya Sangsad Media Centre in the city, BSS reports.

Rowshan said the municipal elections are not a farce as it is a democratic process and Jatiya Party (JP) would be in the polls till its end.

Referring to the comments of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia on the Liberation War, she said it is unfortunate and everyone should abstain from making negative comments on settled issues -- Bangabandhu and Liberation War.

Responding to the comments of JP Chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad on EC and the country's democracy, she said Ershad made the comments to encourage his party's leaders and workers.

She also said though many parties did not participate in the January 5 general polls, JP took part in it to uphold the constitution, and the world community has also supported the election.

Among others, Jatiya Party Presidium member Kazi Firoz Rashid, MP, Chief Whip of Opposition M Tajul Islam Chowdhury, State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives M Mashiur Rahman Ranga and State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu were present on the occasion.
