National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Samanta Shermeen has resigned from the party, citing differences over its alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami, electoral strategy, women's rights and internal democracy.
She announced her resignation in a statement on
Thursday, saying the party had moved away from the values on which it was
founded.
Samanta said she had opposed the NCP's alliance
with Jamaat for nearly a year, arguing that the party was not a suitable political
ally, either ideologically or strategically.
She also criticised the NCP's decision to join the
11-party electoral alliance, saying it had weakened the party's opportunity to
build an independent political identity.
On women's rights, she alleged that the NCP had
failed to recognise women's contributions to the July 2024 mass uprising and
ensure their proper representation in party leadership and decision-making.
She further criticised the party for restructuring
its convening committee without holding a council, saying the move undermined
internal democracy and accountability.
Samanta said she had repeatedly raised these issues
within the party over the past 11 months but failed to bring about any change.
Calling for a new political platform based on
democracy, national sovereignty, gender equality and economic justice, she
urged young people to work towards building a new political force beyond
traditional party politics.
