Mohammad Selim Uddin has been elected ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Dhaka Metropolitan North unit for the 2027-2028 term.

The party's Ameer and Leader of the Opposition, Dr Shafiqur Rahman, announced his name at a meeting of the Central Executive Council at the party's central office in Dhaka on 4 November.

The announcement was made at the party's central office in Moghbazar during an evening meeting of the Central Executive Council.

Around 13,000 voters cast their ballots on October 23 at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre to elect the unit's ameer for the new term. Both male and female party members (rukons) participated in the direct and secret ballot election.

The voting was conducted at 13 booths under the supervision of election commissioner Mohammad Mobarak Hossain, a member of the Central Executive Council, assisted by Dhaka Metropolitan South Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul.

Voters wrote the names of their preferred candidates on ballot papers signed by ATM Masum, the party's central chief election commissioner, and deposited them in ballot boxes.

According to the Jamaat constitution, all elections within the party are conducted democratically, with the person securing the highest number of votes being elected. There are no formal candidates in the party's leadership elections, and anyone aspiring to hold a position is considered ineligible.

Selim Uddin previously served as secretary general of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir in 2003 and as its central president in 2004-2005.

After completing his student life, he played a role as one of the entrepreneurs behind Diganta Television and served as its deputy executive director.

He also served as Ramna ameer from 2008 to 2011, assistant secretary of the undivided Dhaka metropolitan unit from 2012 to 2016, and a member of the Central Executive Council and ameer of Dhaka Metropolitan North from 2017 to 2024.
