A group of people attacked and vandalised the office of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) in the capital’s Paltan area on Monday night.
Shakharav Hossain Sebok, central publicity and publications secretary of the Bangladesh Jubo Union, the youth wing of the CPB, told the Daily Sun that several youths carried out the attack on the office, chanting slogans in support of the ruling BNP, and vandalised it.
They also beat up Jubo Union Finance Secretary Iran Molla and Sports Secretary Sohel Fakir and handed them over to the police, accusing them of being “associates of the Awami League”, he said.
According to CPB sources, the attackers locked the main gate of the party office before leaving.
Earlier in the day, police briefly detained Dipak Shil, former president of the Bangladesh Students’ Union, the student wing of the CPB, during a protest rally in the capital.
Paltan police station Officer-in-Charge Ariful Islam told the media that supporters of Dipak Shil chanted the “Joy Bangla” slogan while celebrating his release following his detention, angering some people who then attacked the CPB office.
