The withdrawal of party symbols in the upcoming local government elections reflects Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s statesmanlike approach, PM’s Political Adviser Zahir Uddin Swapon has said.
“Organisational action will be taken against those who run as candidates in defiance of the party’s decision or work against party-backed candidates,” he said.
Swapon also urged party leaders and activists at all levels to work for candidates supported by the party in the upcoming elections.
The prime minister’s adviser made the remarks during an exchange of views while visiting Puja mandaps in Gournadi and Agailjhara upazilas of his electoral constituency, Barishal-1, accompanied by BNP leaders and activists on Tuesday.
The visits began in the morning and continued until late at night.
Swapon said the prime minister has given instructions on how to proceed with the local government elections. “Those within the party who engage in treachery will not be forgiven by the party.”
Addressing BNP activists, he said, “Remember, the party will support only candidates who are acceptable to the people in the upcoming elections. Anyone whose indiscipline harms the party will face disciplinary action, regardless of their seniority.”
