Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has denounced a social media post attributing a remark on Durga Puja to its Nayeb-e-Ameer and Deputy Leader of the Opposition Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, calling it fake and fabricated.

In a statement sent to the media on Tuesday (20 October), the party’s Assistant Secretary General and Publicity and Media Secretary Advocate Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair, condemned the post and demanded action against those responsible.

He said Taher had been ill for a long time and was currently undergoing treatment.

A Facebook account named ‘Zobaida Rahman’ circulated a photo card bearing the headline, “Durga Puja is not just for Hindus, it is ours too: Jamaat leader Taher”.

Zubair said the statement was fabricated to mislead the public and urged people not to be misled by such disinformation.

He also called on social media users to refrain from spreading false information about individuals to damage their reputations and draw them into controversy.

He urged law enforcement agencies to take necessary action against those involved.
