The resignation of State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraque Hossain could pave the way for him to take on greater political responsibilities focused on public service, Prime Minister’s Adviser for Education and Primary and Mass Education Mahdi Amin has said.

In an emotional Facebook post, Amin expressed support for Ishraque following his formal announcement of resignation from the cabinet on Monday.

Amin, who is currently in Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, said he learned of Ishraque’s resignation while there, describing him as a close friend and a prominent figure in uncompromising street movements.

He said he had known Ishraque for a long time and had worked with him on various issues, including the BNP’s youth engagement, diplomatic outreach, social media and media relations.

Amin also praised Ishraque’s role in the anti-fascist movement and the July Uprising, as well as his family’s political legacy. He described Ishraque’s commitment to nationalist ideals and patriotism as exceptional.

Acknowledging that there could be questions and differences of opinion over Ishraque’s recent methods and procedures, Amin said there was little room for doubt about the objectives, morality and rationale behind the initiative that had sparked the controversy.

He said Ishraque’s political identity and sacrifices could not be measured by his position as a state minister or his resignation letter, adding that his contributions to the party, the country and the people mattered more than any temporary decision.

Amin said the government’s message was clear: accountability would be ensured even when the actions of a young, popular leader trusted by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman sparked controversy.

He expressed confidence that accountability would continue at every level of government in the country’s journey towards nation-building.

Describing Ishraque’s resignation as historic and unprecedented, Amin said it did not mark the end of a chapter. Rather, it could pave the way for Ishraque to undertake greater public-oriented political responsibilities through self-reflection, reform and the support of the people.

Ishraque submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman after announcing his decision at a press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Monday afternoon.

Earlier, the prime minister had directed Ishraque to resign following controversy over the state minister’s participation in an anti-drug drive while carrying a firearm.
