BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu has expressed deep anguish over the death of 13-year-old Ishayat Shahriar Opratim, saying the child should have been living a life centred on school, friends, family and dreams.

In a post on his verified Facebook account on Saturday (19 September), Dudu said Opratim’s age — 13 — should be remembered as a stark reminder of the loss of a young life.

“At 13, a boy’s world should have been the school field, friends’ faces, his mother’s kitchen, examination papers and countless innocent dreams about the future,” he wrote.

He said it was painful that Opratim had instead lost his life, while society was now trying to determine the circumstances behind his death.

Dudu described the incident as a grim reflection on the country’s social and public security situation and called for the circumstances surrounding the child’s death to be brought to light.

Opratim, son of Comilla University Bangla Department Associate Professor Dr Nahida Begum, went missing on Friday afternoon after leaving his rented home in Kotbari with his mother’s iPhone, saying he was going out with friends to take photographs. His phone was last traced to Gandhamati at 6:15pm.

Police recovered his body around 1pm on Saturday from an isolated wooded area on Lalmai Hill in Sananda village. He had injuries to his head.
