The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has nominated its candidates at the organisational level for the Dhaka North and Dhaka South city corporation elections, and the formal announcement of their names will be made at an appropriate time, Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar said on Monday.

“The party will take part in the Dhaka city polls as well and has already nominated its candidates. However, they have not been officially announced yet. The announcement will be made at an appropriate time,” he said.

The Jamaat leader was talking to reporters after a programme at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) in Kakrail, Dhaka.

Meanwhile, according to media reports, Jamaat has hinted that Selim Uddin is likely to vie for Dhaka North City Corporation and Shadik Kayem for Dhaka South City Corporation.

Porwar said Jamaat had made organisational preparations to participate in local government elections.

“The process of finalising candidates for unions, upazilas, districts and city corporations has reached the final stage. Candidates have already been announced internally in many places,” he said.

The Election Commission has not yet announced the dates for the two Dhaka city corporation elections. However, political parties have already started the process of nominating candidates ahead of the polls.

On Sunday, the National Citizen Party (NCP) announced Nasiruddin Patwari as its candidate for mayor of Dhaka South and Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain for Dhaka North.
