The main opposition, the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance, on Sunday marched towards the parliament complex in Dhaka, marking the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearance.
The National Committee for Prevention of
Enforced Disappearance organised the programme, with leaders of the political
coalition joining in solidarity.
The road march was brought out from the
Banglamotor area around 3:40pm and ended in front of the parliament complex
around 4:30pm, from where they submitted a memorandum to Speaker Hafiz Uddin
Ahmed.
Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar,
Assistant Secretary General HM Hamidur Rahman Azad, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis
Secretary General Maulana Jalaluddin Ahmad, JAGPA Vice-President Rashed Prodhan
and several victims of enforced disappearance during the previous Awami League
government joined the road march.
Prior to the march, they held a brief rally
in front of the Banglamotor intersection, presided over by Hasinur Rahman, a
former army officer who was a victim of enforced disappearance during the Awami
League’s tenure.
During the rally, the 11-party alliance
leaders demanded that the ordinance against enforced disappearances, drafted
during the past interim government, be enacted into law. The 11-party alliance
Coordinator Hamidur Rahman Azad delivered the concluding speech.
