BNP Joint Secretary General Syed Emran Saleh Prince has alleged that those repeatedly calling for the downfall of the democratically elected government are engaging in "politics of conspiracy" and undermining the aspirations of the July mass uprising.

Speaking as the chief guest at a victory rally and reception for families of those killed and participants in the July uprising in Haluaghat upazila of Mymensingh on Wednesday (5 August) afternoon, Prince said such activities were creating obstacles to fulfilling the objectives of the popular movement.

"Those who repeatedly speak of toppling the people's elected government are engaged in conspiratorial politics. Through planned conspiracies, they are obstructing the realisation of the hopes and aspirations of the July uprising. Such conduct in the name of politics is completely contrary to the spirit of the July mass uprising and the expectations of the people," he said.

The programme, organised by the Haluaghat Upazila and Municipal units of the BNP to mark the historic July Uprising Day, was originally scheduled to be held at Dhanmahal in Haluaghat North Bazar on Tuesday afternoon. However, due to adverse weather and heavy rainfall, it was shifted to the 500-seat auditorium of the Upazila Parishad.

The event began with the singing of patriotic songs, after which Prince presented honours to the families of those killed during the July uprising and to participants in the movement.

Prince alleged that a particular group was attempting to undermine the national unity forged through the July uprising.

He said that while the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, was striving to govern in line with the spirit of the uprising and the expectations of the people, some opposition leaders were spreading falsehoods, misinformation and making remarks that violated political norms in an attempt to create instability.

He warned that if national unity were weakened, "fascist forces" would gain an opportunity to undermine the achievements of the July uprising.

He urged all political forces to remain united in strengthening democracy, implementing state reforms and fulfilling the aspirations of the people.

Prince also said that resorting to personal attacks, abusive language and misinformation against political opponents reflected "bankrupt politics".

Referring to a recent National Citizen Party (NCP) rally in Haluaghat, he alleged that NCP leader Nasiruddin Patwary had made "indecent, offensive and politically motivated" remarks about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and BNP leaders.

Prince strongly condemned the comments, saying they were inconsistent with political decorum, democratic values and responsible political conduct.

"There will always be differences of opinion and criticism in politics. But personal attacks, misleading statements and falsehoods for political gain cannot be part of a civilised political culture. People expect fact-based, constructive and responsible politics," he added.

The meeting was chaired by Haluaghat Upazila BNP Convener Aslam Mia Babul and conducted by Member Secretary Abu Hasnat Badrul Kabir. Upazila BNP Convener Committee member Hanif Mohammad Shaker Ullah attended as a special guest, while several local BNP and associate body leaders also addressed the gathering.
