Jamaat-e-Islami
has asked the Election Commission (EC) to prevent a select group of administrators
from managing the upcoming local government elections, and withdraw EC’s
recently appointed assistant secretary – on the grounds they are aligned with
the ruling BNP, and could influence the poll results.
During
talks with the EC on Wednesday, the party also called for reconsidering the ban on
MPO-listed teachers from contesting the elections, saying the prohibition goes
against the Constitution.
Jamaat
Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar revealed the details of the discussion at a
post-meeting presser held at the EC building in Agargaon, Dhaka.
The party
also called for invalidating any potential candidate from Awami League, now a
banned political party, Parwar told reporters.
