Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar on Wednesday alleged that the BNP government
is failing to protest people’s right to security by tolerating impunity for rapists
and other sex offenders.
Many
ruling party activists are engaging in rape themselves and committing other
crimes like murder, terrorism, and extortion, he alleged at a major protest
rally held at the South Gate of Baitul Mukarram mosque.
He further
alleged that instead of accepting blame for the alarming security situation,
the ruling BNP is resorting to the old practice of shifting blame on the
opposition.
Rejecting claims
that Jamaat, the country’s biggest opposition party, takes part in and incites
mob attacks, Parwar said the Islamic party does not do mob politics or the
politics of shifting blames. Rather, Jamaat works for establishing fairness and
justice in the society, he said.
He also
criticised the home minister for not visiting the house of eight-year-old Ramisha,
the latest victim in a string of recent rape and murder incidents.
Jamaat’s
Dhaka North unit Chief Mohammad Selim Uddin also faulted the Home Minister for
not visiting Ramisha’s house, or extending condolences to the grieving family.
He himself
visited the house earlier in the day, he claimed, adding the wails of the parents
was unbearable.
Jamaat leader
and Lawmaker Nurul Islam Bulbul called on the government of try rape and sexual
assault cases under a speedy tribunal to ensure swift justice.
