Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed deep concern and protest over the government’s decision to increase fuel prices.
In a statement issued on Sunday (19 April), the party’s Secretary General and former Member of Parliament Mia Golam Parwar criticised the move.
Parwar said that under the revised prices, diesel has increased by Tk15 per litre, kerosene by Tk18, octane by Tk20 and petrol by Tk19.
He warned that such sector-wise price hikes would have a negative impact on the overall economy and create fresh hardship for ordinary people.
Describing the decision as anti-people, he said the increase would raise transport costs, which in turn would push up the prices of essential goods, including food items.
He added that middle- and low-income groups would be the worst affected, as their incomes would remain unchanged while their expenses rise significantly, making daily life more difficult.
Parwar further said that higher fuel prices would increase production costs in industries, ultimately driving inflation.
He also noted that the agricultural sector would come under pressure due to rising costs of irrigation, transport and inputs, posing a risk to food security.
“Ordinary people are already struggling to cope with the rising cost of living. In this situation, the fuel price hike will be like adding insult to injury,” he said.
He urged the government to immediately reconsider the decision and bring fuel prices down to a tolerable level.
