National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Md Nahid Islam on Saturday said that the Awami League (AL), which was banned for its activities, cannot be rehabilitated in the name of the Liberation War and 7 March.
Attempts are being made to rehabilitate the Awami League in the name of the Liberation War and 7 March and this will not be accepted, he said.
Nahid Islam made this statement at an iftar mahfil, organised by the NCP Faridpur district unit at Ambika Memorial Hall in Faridpur.
He said, “The Liberation War is a chapter of our glory. But the Awami League has ruined that glory. They have tried to legitimise various crimes, including disappearances, murder, assassination and money laundering in the name of the Liberation War. That Awami League cannot be rehabilitated by using the name of the Liberation War, 7 March or Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.”
Nahid Islam also accused the government of being deceitful with the expectations of the July movement.
He said, “We took two oaths in light of the directives to implement the July Charter. But the ruling party has betrayed the aspirations of July and the July Charter by taking one oath.”
Expressing his intent to work with the government, he said the Reform Council should be sworn in before the 12 March parliament session.
The NCP convener said, “The fascist president must be removed in the first session. Otherwise, eleven parties will be forced to take to the streets.”
NCP Northern Region Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam, Joint Member Secretary Nizam Uddin, Jatiya Juba Shakti Convener Tariqul Islam, and Jatiya Chhatra Shakti Convener Zahid Ahsan were present as special guests at the iftar mahfil.
Besides, leaders and activists from various levels of the NCP's central and Faridpur districts participated in the programme.
