Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate for the Dhaka-11 constituency MA Kaiyum has brought allegations of widespread vote rigging against National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and elected candidate from the seat Nahid Islam
Speaking to journalists in front of his election
office in the capital on Friday afternoon, Kaiyum said, “How does a candidate
who cannot even appoint polling agents secure such a large number of votes?”
Kaiyum, who serves as the BNP’s secretary for
microcredit affairs, claimed that he had fallen victim to a conspiracy.
He alleged that the election was marred by
large-scale rigging and manipulation, asserting that the results had been
“engineered.”
He further alleged that he was defeated through
postal ballots and described the election as controversial, claiming it had
undermined the government’s credibility.
The BNP leader said he has already submitted an
application to the Election Commission seeking a recount of votes in the
constituency. He warned that if no satisfactory resolution is reached, he will
pursue legal action.
Pointing fingers at his opponents, Kaiyum also
alleged that voters were misled in the name of “July fighters” and claimed that
his supporters were attacked in various areas during the election period.
Although he did not secure a parliamentary seat,
Kaiyum expressed confidence that the BNP is heading toward forming the
government and vowed to fulfill his promises to constituents.
He reiterated his commitment to making his electoral
area free from drugs and terrorism.
