Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman on Tuesday urged voters not to return home without ensuring the vote results, calling on the public to remain vigilant so that votes are not wasted in any way.
He made the remarks at a press conference held after
a meeting of the 11-party electoral alliance at the party’s central office on
Tuesday night.
Shafiqur said Jamaat does not seek favouritism from
anyone, nor does it want to see favouritism shown to others.
“We want everyone to perform their respective duties
with neutrality,” he said.
Expressing concern over the spread of rumours on
election day, he urged people to remain cautious and not to pay heed to misleading
information unless a clear statement is issued by the 11-party alliance.
He warned that certain quarters, fearing defeat,
might attempt to spread false allegations, intimidation, or panic.
“Despite these challenges, Insha’Allah, you will
exercise your voting rights and no one should return without the vote results
in hand,” he said.
He also cautioned that artificial crises could be
created before or after voting, but expressed confidence that the nation would
overcome all obstacles and ensure a successful election.
Referring to the 12 February election, Shafiqur said
the government formed through this election would be the government of a “new
Bangladesh,” reflecting the aspirations of the people.
According to him, the new government would represent
farmers, workers, and labourers; boatmen and day labourers; people of all
professions and classes; men and women alike.
“This government will not belong to any party,
group, or family—it will be the government of the people,” he said.
On the question of electoral credibility, the Jamaat
ameer said an election does not become fair simply because Jamaat claims it is,
nor does it become unfair if Jamaat says so.
“If the people say the election is fair, we will
accept it with respect,” he added.
He emphasised that holding office or sitting in
opposition is not the main issue; rather, Jamaat places full trust in the
people’s verdict.
Shafiqur further said that if Jamaat emerges
victorious, past repression and persecution would come to an end and rational
and fair justice would be ensured.
He pledged justice for the families of victims, from
Abrar to revolutionary Sharif Osman Hadi.
He also paid deep tribute to the 1,400 martyrs and
recalled the contributions of the July fighters.
Reiterating Jamaat’s stance on reform and change, he
said the party’s position has been clear from the beginning. Due to corruption
and misgovernance, the nation has fallen far behind over the past 54 years, he
said.
Taking a firm stand against corruption and establishing good governance and justice in society remain Jamaat’s core commitments, adding that ensuring these two principles would enable the country to overcome its backwardness.
