The parliamentary seat of BNP reserved-seat lawmaker Ferdousi Ahmed Misty has been declared vacant following her resignation.

The Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat issued a gazette notification on Thursday afternoon, declaring Women Seat-23 of the 13th National Parliament vacant with effect from 1 October under Article 67(2) of the Constitution.

Earlier in the afternoon, Ferdousi Ahmed Misty submitted her resignation letter to Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed after meeting him at the Jatiya Sangsad.

The resignation came after Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman directed her to step down following allegations of her involvement in the attack, vandalism and looting at the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur. Misty has denied involvement in the incident, while an investigation is underway.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said earlier that the Speaker had not yet declared the seat vacant at the time of his comments. He, however, said a by-election would be held within 90 days from the date of resignation.

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters at the Election Commission building in the capital on Thursday afternoon.

Ferdousi Ahmed was among the 36 BNP-alliance candidates elected to reserved women’s seats in the 13th National Parliament. She represents Women Seat-23.
