A murder case accused fled from a courtroom at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Tuesday after removing his handcuffs, becoming the latest in a series of recent escapes from police custody across the country.
The fugitive was identified as Shariful Islam, son of deceased Shafique Ahmed of Haripur village under Nawabganj police station in Dinajpur.
The constable responsible for securing Shariful, Md Abdul Alim, has been suspended, and a three-member probe committee formed to investigate how the accused escaped for the second time.
According to court sources, Shariful had earlier fled from the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court on 19 June 2025 after biting an on-duty police officer. He was arrested from the Feni Railway Station area on 1 October that year and had remained in prison custody since then.
Shariful is a chargesheeted accused in the Jishan Hossain murder case filed with Khilgaon police station.
On Tuesday, he was produced before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam’s court in connection with a case filed with Kotwali police station over his previous escape.
Police sources said Alim produced Shariful before the court at 10:25am, where he was handcuffed and secured to the bars of the dock.
At around 12:30pm, Shariful fled while the constable was in the court corridor. The handcuffs were later found hanging from the dock.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) Mohiuddin Mahmud Sohel said the incident took place inside the courtroom while the judge was on the bench.
“Legal steps have been taken over the incident and an investigation will be conducted,” he said, adding that efforts were underway to arrest Shariful.

The latest incident came amid several similar escapes in recent days.

A preliminary investigation later found that he had fled from Tantibazar in Dhaka with the help of police personnel. He remained absconding as of Tuesday, according to Police Headquarters.
On 30 September, Abu Siddique, 55, fled from police custody with handcuffs in the Chandipur area of Damurhuda upazila, Chuadanga. Police said he was arrested within 24 hours and subsequently sent to jail custody.
On the same day, Rohingya accused Ibrahim escaped from Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital while handcuffed and under the guard of three police constables.
He had earlier been arrested with two other Rohingyas with firearms in Ukhia. Ibrahim was arrested again on Tuesday and produced before the court, police said.
