The Parliamentary Caucus on Climate Change and Displacement held its first meeting on Sunday, following the formation later in September to address climate-induced migration and displacement.
The meeting was held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with its Chairman Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury in the chair.
At the meeting, a work plan was discussed which focuses on strengthening coordination among government ministries and agencies dealing with climate change, water management, disaster response and migration-related issues. The caucus recommended inviting representatives of six key government bodies to its next meeting-- the Environment Ministry; LGRD Ministry; Internal Resources Division; Foreign Affairs Ministry; Water Resources Ministry; and the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief.
The caucus also proposed forming a coordination committee involving representatives of the relevant ministries. The meeting also discussed greater parliamentary engagement with national and international initiatives on climate change and displacement.
Additional secretary of the Environment Ministry, managing director of RMMRU, director general of Foreign Affairs Ministry and senior officials of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat were also present at the meeting.
