Anti-Awami League protesters vandalised at least three
police vehicles at Dhanmondi-32 and surrounding areas on Monday evening as
tensions continue in the area since morning.
Policemen inside the vehicles were injured in the attacks,
and some protesters also sustained wounds from broken windows of the vehicles.
Protesters, allied with different groups representing the
July Uprising, have engaged in at least three major clashes with the police and
army on Monday, as they attempt to tear down the remains of Sheikh Mujib’s
residence at Dhanmondi-32.
Agitators have marked the residence as “ the pilgrimage site”
for Awami League’s fascist members, and pledged to demolish it completely
following the death verdict announced against party chief Sheikh Hasina earlier
in the day.
It is already in a “nearly worn out” state as agitators brought down the main structure earlier this year. The incident and apparent government inaction to prevent tensions in February drew sharp domestic and international criticisms at the time.
This time, the government has vowed strict action against any attempt to cause unrest and chaos in the country in the name of “emotional outpours” against Hasina and AL that lead to instability.
