A parked bus suddenly caught fire in Savar on Saturday night, forcing the driver to jump out in order to save his life.

Around 10:30pm, the fire broke out at the bus that had been parked at the Genda U-turn on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway after dropping off workers of Metro Garments.

Driver Selim said he was asleep inside the vehicle when the rear section of the bus erupted in flames. “I felt an intense wave of heat and immediately jumped out. That is how I survived,” he said.

Savar Fire Station’s senior station manager Jahangir Alam said they were alerted around 10:30pm and quickly deployed two units to the spot. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze, but the bus was already severely damaged.

“The exact cause of the fire remains unclear. A formal investigation will reveal what triggered it,” he stated.

Savar Highway Police Station in-charge Saleh Ahmed confirmed that police inspected the scene shortly after the incident.

“The fire started from the back of the bus. We are examining all possible reasons, including technical issues or any other cause behind the fire,” he said.
