Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) General Secretary SM Farhad has asserted the student body’s zero-tolerance policy against rape and sexual harassment, insisting that no individual- regardless of position or influence- will be spared if found accusations.

Speaking at a human chain formed at the base of the Raju Sculpture on Saturday evening, Farhad expressed solidarity with protesters demanding exemplary punishment for Chemistry Department Professor Ershad Halim, who has been accused of “perverted sexual behaviour”.

Farhad criticised what he described as “negligence and indifference” on the part of both the university administration and state authorities.

“If a teacher is accused and the allegation is proven, punishment must come from two end- the university and the state. We have witnessed negligence from both sides, and it even appears the matter is being deliberately ignored,” he said.

He added that the administration could have promptly formed an investigation committee, published its findings and taken disciplinary action. Its failure to do so, he noted, had raised questions about whether individuals within the department or other teachers were involved.

DUCSU Literary and Cultural Secretary Musaddek Ali Ibne Mohammad said that after Halim’s arrest, it was the state’s responsibility to place him on remand and proceed with due legal action. Since no application for remand was made, he termed the situation a “major conspiracy”, alleging that a political group was providing protection.

“We are warning the authorities- apply for remand immediately and take effective action,” he demanded.

Musaddek further urged the university to call an emergency syndicate meeting to expel Halim and insisted that the only punishment for rape should be the death penalty.

He also called for the formulation of a “clear state law” against homosexuality, demanding maximum punishment for those involved.

DUCSU Executive Member Sarvamitra Chakma was also present at the human chain, where participating students called for a speedy trial, unveiling of the full truth and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
