Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian has been ordered to appear in court in person to explain how a murder suspect in police custody was able to give statements to the media blaming the victim.
The directive was issued after a miscellaneous case was filed over the widely circulated video of the suspect speaking from the hospital while under police supervision.
The order was passed on Saturday by Magistrate Md Mamunur Rashid of the Rajpara Police Station’s Amli Court, court official Amjad Ali confirmed.
The next hearing has been scheduled for 19 November, by which time the police commissioner must appear before the court and provide a formal explanation.
According to the court order, media reports state that on Thursday (13 Nov), accused Limon Mia, 36, allegedly entered the rented flat of Rajshahi Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahman by subterfuge.
He then fatally attacked the judge’s 17-year-old son, Tawshif Rahman Suman, with a sharp weapon and by suffocation. Limon also allegedly attacked the judge’s wife, Tasmin Nahar Lusi, seriously injuring her.
Police later arrested Limon and admitted him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment. However, while still in police custody at the hospital, the accused gave statements to various media outlets blaming the victim — a development that prompted legal questions about police oversight.
The court noted that allowing a detainee to speak to the media in this manner raises concerns about procedural integrity and custodial protocol. It therefore issued a show-cause notice asking why legal action should not be taken against Commissioner Abu Sufian for permitting such access.
On Thursday afternoon, Tawshif was killed inside the family’s rented apartment in the city’s Dabtala area. His mother, who was also injured in the attack, is undergoing treatment.
The accused himself sustained injuries during the scuffle and was subsequently hospitalised, during which time his video statement went viral on social media.
