The government has officially launched the historic paddle steamer PS Mahsud as a new tourism vessel on inland river routes, aiming to showcase Bangladesh’s century-old maritime heritage to future generations.

The formal inauguration took place on Saturday morning, led by Brigadier General (Retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hossain, Adviser to the Ministry of Shipping. The ceremony was attended by Lutf-e Siddiqi, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, along with several senior secretaries, secretaries, and government officials.

Heritage steamer to begin Dhaka–Barishal service from 21 November

Speaking at the event, the Shipping Adviser said the PS Mahsud would serve as a symbol of Bangladesh’s river culture and a unique addition to river-based tourism. The vessel will begin its regular tourist service on the Dhaka–Barishal route from Friday, 21 November.

He added that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus welcomed the decision to restore and relaunch the century-old steamer—owned by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC)—as a pleasure craft after essential repairs.

“PS Mahsud is more than just a vessel; it is a living testament to our riverine heritage,” he said. “We want the new generation to witness how river routes once shaped Bangladesh’s communication and culture.”

The adviser also announced that restoration plans are underway for several other old steamers—including PS Ostrich, PS Lepcha, and PS Turn—to preserve river heritage and expand river tourism potential.

Tourism features to attract local and foreign travellers

Shipping Secretary Dr Nurunnahar Chowdhury NDC said the revived paddle steamer is expected to draw significant interest from both domestic and international tourists. Traditional Bangladeshi food, cultural performances, and other attractions will be arranged for foreign visitors.

According to BIWTC, the restoration process preserved the vessel’s original structure and historic design while fully upgrading its engine, safety systems, and fire safety features. The steamer now includes modern cabins, tourist-friendly decks, and digital navigation technology.

Weekly service between Dhaka and Barishal

Under the new schedule, the vessel will operate once weekly. On Friday, it will depart Dhaka’s Sadarghat at 8:00am and will arrive in Barishal at night. On Saturday, it will return from Barishal to Dhaka.

Unlike the previous nighttime services, the steamer will now travel during the day—allowing passengers to enjoy scenic river views, riverside landscapes and a unique heritage travel experience.

The vessel has been equipped with international-standard safety gear, lifeboats, fire safety measures, and GPS navigation. Its modernised engine uses low-emission technology to help reduce river pollution.

BIWTC officials believe day-time operations will enhance the tourism experience and attract a new generation of travellers to Bangladesh’s river routes.
