At least three people were killed and 18 others injured when a Dhaka-bound bus crashed into the rear of a parked drum truck on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway in Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur early Wednesday.
One of the deceased was Mozaffar Hossain, 35, of Chandrakhana village in Fulbari upazila of Kurigram. The identities of the other two victims were not immediately known.
Boro Darga Highway Police Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Moniruzzaman said the Kurigram-bound bus of Khan Express rammed into the rear of a parked drum truck killing one person on the spot while two others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. Of the injured, 11 were taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Doctors said the death toll could rise.
Boro Darga Highway Police Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Moniruzzaman said police were trying to prevent vehicles from parking outside designated areas despite limited manpower.
He said some vehicles were left on the road after breaking down without proper warning signs, creating risks for other motorists. High-speed driving and drowsiness among drivers also contributed to serious accidents, he added.
