A case has been filed against two doctors of a private hospital in Jamalpur over alleged medical negligence that a government official claimed led to four surgeries and treatment costs of around Tk 50 lakh.
The complainant, Saberi Sharmin, alleged that doctors removed parts of her uterus and ovaries without her consent during surgery at MA Rashid Hospital on 29 January. She later underwent three more operations at hospitals in Dhaka and Chennai, India, due to complications, including infection.
Saberi filed the case with the Jamalpur Court on Monday. The accused are Dr Sabrina Barkat, a gynaecologist, and Dr Mohammad Harun-ur-Rashid, a general surgeon at the hospital. Jamalpur Administrative Court Judge Mostafizur Rahman accepted the case and directed the civil surgeon to investigate the allegations and submit a report.
According to the complaint, Saberi, who works as an upazila academic supervisor at the Jamalpur Sadar Upazila Education Office, was admitted to MA Rashid Hospital on 20 January with lower abdominal pain.
Medical tests reportedly found an infection around her fallopian tubes and ovaries, along with a blood-filled cyst in her right ovary. Doctors subsequently advised surgery.
The complaint alleged that parts of her uterus and ovaries were removed without her or her relatives' consent during the operation conducted under the supervision of the two accused doctors. Some tissue allegedly remained inside, and her condition deteriorated due to infection.
After further examinations, doctors advised another operation. Saberi was then admitted to a private hospital in Dhaka, where she underwent a second surgery on 5 February to remove infected fluid. She later travelled to Chennai for advanced treatment, underwent a third surgery on 23 March and a fourth on 20 June. Saberi said the initial operation at MA Rashid Hospital cost Tk1.86 lakh, while her total treatment expenses amounted to around Tk50 lakh.
Jamalpur Civil Surgeon Dr Mohammad Azizul Haque said his office received the court order on Monday evening. “We will form an investigation committee soon and submit a report to the court after completing the investigation,” he said.
