Production resumes at Jamuna Fertiliser Factory after 14-day shutdown

Urea fertiliser production has resumed on Friday at Jamuna Fertiliser Factory Limited (JFCL) in Sarishabari upazila of Jamalpur after a 14-day shutdown caused by a boiler fault. Production restarted at 10am after engineers and technicians repaired the mechanical problem, factory sources said.
The resumption has brought relief to factory officials, employees, local traders and farmers who depend on the plant’s output. Officials hope continued production will help ease potential urea shortages in the northern region during the upcoming farming season.
According to factory sources, production had remained suspended since 15 January due to a gas shortage. Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited resumed gas supply on 20 September after an eight-month shutdown.
However, production could not restart immediately because of insufficient gas pressure.
Operations eventually resumed on the night of 7 October after gas pressure improved, but a boiler leak forced another shutdown on 9 October.
Deputy Chief Engineer (Chemistry) Md Fazlul Haque said engineers had worked continuously to repair the boiler and fully resolve the fault two days before production resumed. He said production restarted after the repair work was completed and the factory received the required gas pressure.
Established in 1990 at Tarakandi in Jamalpur, the factory began commercial production in 1991. It has a daily production capacity of 1,700 tonnes of urea and supplies fertiliser to 21 districts, including Jamalpur, Sherpur, Mymensingh, Tangail and Rajbari. The resumption of production is expected to help maintain a steady supply of urea fertiliser to the districts served by the factory.
