Police have arrested the prime accused Fazlul Haque Amini, in the murder case filed over the mob killing of Wahiduzzaman Shamim, 38, in Debhata upazila of Satkhira on 13 October.
Amini, 45, was arrested around 11pm on Saturday from a relative’s house in Faridpur village of Kaliganj upazila, police said. Amini, allegedly used a Facebook live broadcast to gather a crowd to beat Shamim.
A joint team comprising members of Debhata Circle, Kaliganj Police Station, Debhata Police Station and Special Response Battalion (SRB)-6 conducted the raid.
Debhata Police Station Officer-in-Charge HM Shaheen said Amini was tracked down using intelligence and technological information.
He was using a mobile phone and SIM card registered to someone else’s name, he added.
“Police have yet to obtain significant information from the initial interrogation. Amini will be produced before a court on Sunday, and police will seek a seven-day remand”, the OC said.
Shamim’s elder brother, Abdul Jalil, filed the murder case on 15 October, naming Amini as the prime accused and 10 others, along with 200 to 250 unidentified people. Earlier, police arrested two other accused, Moktar Hossain Khan, 53, and Asadul Islam Mollah, 46, on 16 October and they were subsequently sent to jail. The OC said investigators had identified some of those involved by analysing CCTV footage and mobile phone data.
According to Shamim’s family and the case statement, Shamin had been suffering from mental health problems for a long time.
An audio clip of an argument between him and his wife went viral on social media on 12 October. After allegations that the recording contained remarks hurting religious sentiments, people attempted to attack his house, and he was beaten at a local market. His family later said he had consumed poison.
The following day, more than a hundred people gathered at the chamber of local village doctor, where Shamim was receiving treatment.
They dragged him outside and beat him before police rescued him and took him to Debhata Upazila Health Complex. Later, angry mob entered the health complex and beat Shamim again.
Security personnel, including Ansar members and hospital workers, failed to stop the attack. Police eventually rescued Shamim and transferred him to Satkhira Medical College Hospital, where he died.
Hospital authorities said some CCTV cameras were disconnected, making it impossible to review all footage. Police have not yet requested the recordings, but the hospital is trying to preserve the available footage.
