The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) attempted to push 12 people, including women and children, into Bangladesh through the Lalmonirhat border early Sunday, but retreated in the face of resistance from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The incident occurred around 3am near border pillar 838/1 in the Burimari Bamandal area of Patgram upazila.
According to BGB and local sources, the group comprised eight men, two women and two children. The BGB patrol team rushed to the spot after detecting the attempt and took a strong position, forcing the BSF to back off.
The 12 people are currently inside Indian territory, around 100 yards from the zero line, the sources said. The incident has raised tension in the border area, prompting the BGB to strengthen patrols and surveillance to prevent further attempts. The BGB also called a flag meeting with the BSF on Sunday morning to formally protest the incident and seek an explanation for the attempted push-in.
Lt Col Md Shahinul Islam, commander of the 61 BGB Teesta Battalion, said that the BGB has strongly protested and called for a flag meeting with the BSF. “Efforts are underway to resolve the issue through the flag meeting. BGB surveillance is continuing to ensure border security,” he said.
