The Power Development Board (PDB) on Monday suspended Lakshmipur Executive Engineer Nurul Amin after a video purportedly showing him discussing a bribe and accepting cash went viral on social media, Facebook.
PDB Chairman Engineer Md Rezaul Karim confirmed the suspension and said that a departmental probe has been ordered over the matter. The video, which surfaced on Sunday night, is about eight minutes and 50 seconds long. In one part of the video, Nurul Amin is heard telling a person, “AC sir has agreed. For whatever reason, I will not settle for less than Tk2 crore. Even if I have to go to the chairman, I will. Let’s see what the chairman says.” He is then heard saying, “If I take Tk2 crore for a bill, will the chairman go against me? Rather, he will give me a posting at a suitable place?”
In another part of the video, Nurul Amin discusses the cost of a project and alleged embezzlement of project materials by an individual. He is heard saying, “The calculation is simple. A job worth Tk3 lakh requires materials costing Tk30 lakh. So, how many crores of taka is he embezzling? By that calculation, it appears he has embezzled Tk5 crore. Give me Tk2 crore out of that Tk5 crore, and I will sign everything.”
However, it was not clear what the context of the video is, who the person in front is. In the video, the executive engineer is seen holding something and asking the person, "How much is this?" In response, the person in front said, "35, sir." The executive engineer then said, "Yes, 35, 1 lakh 35." The person in front then said, "I gave you one lakh earlier, sir. On Monday, several attempts were made to contact Executive Engineer Nurul Amin by phone for his comments on the allegations and the video, but he did not answer. He was also absent from his office.
