Mehdi Hasan, 24, the main earning member of his family, had been saving money to build a new house for his parents in Hajipara village of Domar upazila in Nilphamari. But his dream ended with his death in a road accident in Dhaka’s Baridhara on Tuesday.
Mehdi, who lived with his parents in Hajipara under Sonara union, was killed when a car hit him while he was resting on a footpath after offering Asr prayers in Baridhara. His body was taken to his village home around 11:30am on Wednesday and buried after a funeral prayer at 3pm.
Family members said Mehdi had been planning to build a new house for his parents with his earnings. As the family owns no cultivable land and only has a homestead, he used to contribute Tk12,000–15,000 to the family every month.
He is survived by his parents, two brothers and a sister. His elder brother Muktadi has a separate family, while his sister is married.
Mehdi’s cousin Sajjad Chowdhury Joy said Mehdi had hearing and speech impairments and was a second-year BA student at Domar Government College. His father works as a day labourer, making Mehdi the main earning member of the family.
He left for Dhaka with other workers on Monday night and arrived early Tuesday. He worked as a mason and also engaged in small businesses to support his family. Mehdi was also skilled at making paper flowers and other handicrafts and had expertise in various forms of artwork.
