Two school-going brothers drowned and their classmate went missing while taking bath in the Meghna River in Sonargaon of Narayanganj on Sunday.
The incident occurred in the noon in the Bhatibandar area of Pirojpur union. The deceased were twin brothers Ashekin, 15, and Arefin, 15, ninth-grade students of Mograpara Government School in Sonargaon. They were the sons of Faruk Ahmed of Barimajlish area in Mograpara union. Their classmate Abir, 14, an eighth-grader at the same school, remains missing.
According to sixth-grader Adian Fariz, 12, who survived the incident, the students skipped the school and went to Bhatibandar to visit the area. They later went to the river to bathe. “At one point, three of them got onto a sand-laden trawler near the riverbank. They fell into the water while they were getting off and began sinking into the water,” Adian said. Hearing his cries, locals rushed to the spot and informed the police and fire service.
A diving team from Sonargaon Fire Service, along with Naval Police, conducted a rescue operation and recovered the bodies of Ashekin and Arefin after nearly two hours, said Zahed Chowdhury, station officer of Sonargaon Fire Service.
He said the fire service diving team reached the spot soon after receiving information that three students had gone missing in the Meghna. “After nearly two hours of searching, we recovered the bodies of the two brothers.
