Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar district has witnessed a record betel nut harvest this season, bringing joy to local farmers.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, favourable weather conditions and the use of balanced fertilisers contributed to the increased yield.
Farmers were able to harvest betel nuts on time, benefiting from the absence of natural disasters, and received fair market prices. This success has encouraged more farmers to consider betel nut cultivation in the coming season.
Sabrang union leads commercial production with 370 hectares of orchards, followed by Baharchhara (360 ha), Teknaf Sadar (350 ha), Hoiyang (50 ha), Hnila (40 ha), and Prabaldwip (10 ha). In total, 1,280 hectares of betel nut orchards in Teknaf produced 10,240 tonnes this season, valued at approximately Tk12.5 crore.
Farmers said betel nut from Teknaf is distributed to various districts and even exported abroad. While traditionally a six-month crop, new twelve-month varieties allow year-round commercial harvesting. Farmers also preserve some produce as “wet betel nut,” which commands higher prices during the off-season. Many locals earn substantial income by selling preserved betel nuts.
Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Md Shafiul Alam confirmed the production figures, while Upazila Agriculture Officer Mohammad Humayun Kabir credited the success to close collaboration between field officers and farmers, along with hands-on training in fertilizer management and disease control.
