Bangladesh and Japan have emphasised strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation through alternative financing beyond foreign direct investment (FDI).
The emphasis came at a meeting between Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and his Japanese counterpart Satsuki Katayama at the latter’s office in Tokyo on Friday. The meeting reviewed the longstanding economic ties between the two countries and explored ways to deepen their partnership and elevate bilateral cooperation to a new level, according to a press release.
Discussions focused on infrastructure development, trade expansion and opportunities to enhance cooperation through alternative financing beyond FDI. Both sides agreed on the need for effective initiatives to strengthen existing economic ties, make the partnership more dynamic and explore cooperation in new sectors.
The PM's Special Assistant for Investment and Capital Market Tanvir Gani and Special Assistant for Employment in the Asia-Pacific Shakirul Islam Khan attended the meeting, along with officials from both countries.
Japan is one of Bangladesh’s major development partners, financing several large infrastructure and social development projects. Japanese-funded projects are continuing, while new agreements are being pursued to support Bangladesh’s development.
