Exhibition Dedicated To Mother Language Day Underway At BSA

A fortnight-long international art exhibition titled ‘Celebrating Mother Language in the Light of Art’, jointly organized by Artopolitan, an art organization promoting visual arts and artists of the world and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), is underway at National Art Gallery (Gallery No 2, 3 and Sculpture Gallery) of BSA. The exhibition was inaugurated by eminent educationist and National Professor Dr Anisuzzaman on February 23, 2019 with Mahfuz Anam, Editor and Publisher of The Daily Star and Tamanna Tahmina Tanji, Director, Asrotex Group, in attendance. Internationally renowned artist Monirul Islam, also the chairman of the jury committee of the exhibition, presided over the inaugural ceremony while Tanjila Sumaia Siddiqye, visual artist, convener and creative director of Artopolitan, delivered the welcome speech.


Dedicated to the martyrs of the Language Movement, the exhibition features diverse visual arts by artists from 32 countries including Bangladesh, India, China, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, France, Spain, USA, Australia, Austria, Mauritius and Brunei. An open call for worldwide artists took place, where they submitted 2200 artworks. The artwork selection committee selected 212 artworks for display, from where the jury committee nominated five artworks to be awarded.

Kuntal Barai (Bangladesh) bagged the Grand Award while Swapan Das (India), Md. Anisul Haque (Bangladesh), Fadly Sabran (Malaysia) and Samia Ahmed (Bangladesh) received Honourable Mention Awards. The organizers honored eminent Bangladeshi artist Murtaja Baseer, a language movement veteran, with a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for his life-long contributions to art.

Eminent cultural personality Asaduzzaman Noor is the chief adviser while internationally renowned artist Shahabuddin Ahmed, Ekushey Padak winning artist Jamaluddin Ahmed and thespian Liaquat Ali Lucky are the advisers of organizing committee of the exhibition. Zahangir Alom, a visual artist and journalist, is the curator of the exhibition.

A befitting closing ceremony, showcasing an array of performing arts including music, dance, poetry recitation, mime and more, will take place at National Art Gallery Auditorium, BSA at 5:30 pm on March 9, 2019. The exhibition is open for all.
