A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced the chairman, Mohi Uddin Mazumder, and managing director, Abhiur Rahman Khan, of international gateway operator Apple GlobalTel Communications Ltd to 22 years in prison each and fined them Tk926.74 crore each in a money laundering case.

Judge Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 delivered the verdict under two separate charges, said Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) prosecutor Mohammad Zahirul Islam.

The court issued sentencing warrants and arrest warrants against them as the accused were absconding during the pronouncement of the verdict.

According to the verdict, the accused were sentenced to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment each for money laundering. The court also imposed a fine of Tk926.74 crore to the accused, double the amount involved in the offence, Tk463.37 crore.

In default of payment of the fine, they will have to serve an additional year of simple imprisonment.

The duo were also sentenced to a further 10 years of rigorous imprisonment each for criminal breach of trust and fined Tk10 lakh, with an additional year of simple imprisonment in default of payment.

The court also ordered the confiscation of their movable and immovable properties in favour of the state if they fail to pay the fine.

On 23 February 2022, ACC Director Jalal Uddin Ahmed filed the case, alleging that the accused had laundered US$601,785,210, equivalent to Tk463.37 crore, through international incoming calls under the guise of service exports, despite Bangladesh having a financial interest in the transactions.

On 25 March 2025, the investigating officer submitted a charge sheet against the two accused after completing the investigation. The court subsequently framed charges and began the trial. During the trial, the court recorded testimony from seven of the eight witnesses.
