Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was produced before the International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Monday morning as the court prepares to deliver its verdict in a case related to alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising. He was brought to the tribunal at approximately 8:30 am.
The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Golam Martuza Mazumder, is scheduled to announce the verdict today. The bench also includes Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
According to the case details presented in court, the principal accused is deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted from power and is reported to be currently in India. The two other accused are former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. Both Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan have been declared absconders.
The tribunal reserved its judgment on 23 October after concluding the legal arguments from both the prosecution and the defense. At that time, the court indicated that the verdict would be delivered “very soon,” with the official date later announced as 17 November.
During the arguments, the prosecution sought the maximum penalty—death sentences for Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan—along with an order for the confiscation of their properties.
In contrast, state-appointed defense counsel Md. Amir Hossain argued for their full acquittal.
The tribunal is expected to announce its decision later today.
